I’m listening to another recent Bo Burnham podcast with Pete Holmes and I think Bo has said so many important things that I think people should read/hear.

“Young girls are told to be hot and you’ll get a good guy. Men are told that you can be fat, you can be ugly…look at every sitcom. If you’re funny, you can get a girl. Women are told that that’s not true. Women say…what’s the first thing you like about a guy? Sense of humor. When does a guy say that? They never say that.”

“In school, before a play where I was a singing turkey, a girl came up to me, tapped me on the shoulder, and said ‘Bo, are you gay?’ and I, through welled up tears, turned to her and said, ‘I’m not a fucking faggot.’ and I walked on stage and sang a song about a turkey. I was so angry; I’d never used that word like that. But it was because I was so afraid of being what everybody laughed at.”
     This one I think is important. People throw around the word like such an insult, specifically men, because they’re scared. They’re so afraid of being a “faggot” because they know that everybody else is scared of being gay because it’s looked down upon. Some men are just so ridiculously scared of showing their feminine sides even just slightly that they resort to being cruel.

“It’s the fact that that’s where the fucking argument is with some of these people…they’re worried about it being ‘natural’vwhen the world is overpopulated. They’re worried that these people can’t procreate….when there’s millions of children that need to be adopted. We’re worried about the two people that can’t make children and would love to take some.”
     This. This. I will never understand this argument.

“The idea of respecting views is so ridiculous. I don’t need to respect views. Would you respect my views if I said I believe unicorns are real? I hope anger gets stirred up a little more. People say it’s all about respect and multiculturalism…you gotta respect that people have different—no, kids are fucking killing themselves. Kids are killing themselves because of ideas like this…ideas that start with, ‘well, no, it’s just my belief that you shouldn’t get married.’ Well, little kids hearing that fucking kill themselves… …if your belief is hateful toward people, I don’t respect it. I hate it. I hate that belief.”

“A lot of comedians bash the fact that material is taped and put online…and that it’s a big problem and it ruins it. But I think it’s such a beautiful thing. If I go online, I can see myself performing for the last four years. I can see my bits evolve. And, more importantly, a kid, if he wanted to become a comedian, could go online and could see my process, which I think is just as important as my product… …What, it’s cutting out some of the sales…and multimillionaires are becoming millionaires. All of these things are going to collapse…it’s going to be wonderful. When the movie studios collapse, and the music studios…all it’s doing is putting art back into people’s hands. Because I think art is something that’s meant to be made as much as it is consumed. And right now a group of people, artists, have hoarded it as this thing to sell… …It’s making it less sellable. It’s making the rich less rich. It’s going to make the celebrities less famous. And it’s going to make everyone artists and I’m so excited about it. If it makes ticket sales or album sales plummet, fucking good riddance. Having been someone that’s been able to participate in creating art, I want everyone else to have that.”
